I’m told on good authority that someone else has already signed a contract even fatter than this one. I heard the $300M number on NPR yesterday and had to look it up and confirm for myself. What the actual heck?

Bryce Harper signed a 13 year, 330 million dollar contract. That's sports these days.

Harper. The Latter-Day Saint. His contract is worth more money, but spread over a longer period, so less per year than Manny.
That’s sports these days? No time nor interest.

I don’t understand these baseball contracts these guys are not going to be good players in their 30s.

Mike Trout just got over $400 million.

Mike Trout just signed for $430 MILLION, I believe.

They probably enter into it knowing that they won’t finish, and get paid pro-rated. But it locks them in and keeps them from leaving. My guess, anyhow.

So I’m told. Now, let’s all go out and spend our own hard-earned money on some bling so that we can pay to advertise for them.

The theory is that they are worth more than that now, so if they are worth less on the backend, it’s not an issue, it’s basically just a deferred payment for their current skill. Also worth noting that Harper and Machado are in their mid-2 0's, whereas most of the really bad long term contracts have been to players in their early 30s. The Dodgers and Phillies should get five years or so before they start any major decline.

Trout’s 12 year $430M deal is the new champ. I think that may look pretty bad for the Angels by the end. Trout is 27, and if he starts dropping off at 31, it could be very bad for them. For right now though, they have the best player in baseball locked up.
Also worth noting that while it is by far the biggest contract ever offered, in terms of real dollars per year, it’s still not quite as good as A- Rod’s monster deal in 2000. That was worth $252M/10 year in 12/2001, which would be around $36.6M/year today, vs. Trout’s $ 35.8M, though Trout has the longer duration . Of course the Angels should be much better able to handle that big chunk of change than the Rangers were.

Baseball contracts are weird. You pay a guy for 10 years (or 13 in the case of Bryce Harper or Mike Trout) and you basically just assume the last three years are going to be awful. I suppose it’s the cost of doing business, and they’d rather pay a guy $30 per year for 10 than 40 per year for 7, so that’s how it is. It’s stupid, but those guys were projected to get more than that so maybe it’s getting less stupid.
That said, there’s a stat that says Mike Trout is worth like $70 million a year so maybe not.

Of this offseason’s three mega contracts, I think I’d be most comfortable with Machado’s . Harper has been pretty mediocre at times, and while Trout is the best player in baseball, I wouldn’t want to be on the hook until he’s 39.

Ridiculous. Simply ridiculous. Now, let’s all go out and spend our own money on stuff so that we can advertise for them.

Even if he only lasted a couple of years, that would still be like $60M. I could retire on that, I should think.
And if the contract is $300M, how much goes to agents and lawyers?

and this is why a 20 oz beer is $11.50.

Why do people even support this? Mystery to me.

It’s more like they’ll sign a big name player for $300M because they can sell piss water for $1/oz. Still, San Diego is a great place to watch an evening summer ballgame.

Makes sense. I remember Cano getting that crazy contract he didnt do much.

I’m convinced they set alcohol prices so high because they don’t want to have to deal with belligerent drunk people after the game.

Not much getting bled off . I’m not sure what agents take in MLB, but I believe NFL agents have their cut fixed at 3% (which is a lot of money). I can’t fault these guys for going out and getting what the market will bear, it’s not like their team owners would have donated it to charity otherwise. I do think Warren has the right idea on the wealth tax though.

Believe me, that doesn’t work. The money I see people dropping on booze at Red Wings games is staggering.
Doesn’t help that the team could drive anyone to drink as of late.

It’s about keeping butts in seats. The Dodgers average the highest attendance in MLB at over 47,000. A few years ago when the team was awful as low as 36,000. At their average ticket price of around $ 41 that’s a $36 million per year in just ticket sales alone. That’s his salary right there before concession sales, TV/radio contracts, merchandise, etc. You can still get outfield tickets for the Dodgers for like $32. Throw in $30 for a couple beers that’s not bad for a night out to see a team with some stars on it.

too late to put a ceiling on these things, maybe back in 1994 when we walked out of a Texas Ranger game in a mass protest of how they were about to go out on strike for more money, Bobby Bonilla had the highest salary that year of $ 6.3m

I wonder if they’ll keep getting paid when the inevitable strike happens in 2021 when the CBA expires.
It may sound ludicrous but the market can support these types of contracts so players will get them. IMHO all 3 of the big signings this year were bad contracts that are going to blow up in the teams faces 5-8 years from now.
